Which NATO members are most likely to co-design and build a warship?
Short answerNavies sharing operating conditions are the best fit; a common Baltic patrol or corvette design with national construction is a particularly plausible model.
NotesThe proposed Baltic patrol vessel would combine anti-submarine warfare with local air defence. Those capabilities are needed to turn allied control of the surrounding coasts into usable sea routes, since an area can deny access to an opponent while still being unsafe for its own shipping. A design below about 1,000 tons is suggested for Germany, Poland, the Baltic states, and Scandinavian navies with overlapping needs. Common design work could spread research and development costs while construction remained in national yards. Danish participation would offer experience with StanFlex modular systems. Visby and aging small combatants provide context for the proposal, without making it an announced procurement program.
