National commitments remain part of alliance fleet planning

The British example distinguishes alliance usefulness from the ability to meet independent commitments.

Notes

A fleet can support an alliance while retaining responsibilities of its own. The British example links usefulness to NATO with the expectation of allied assistance. It also recalls conflicts in which allies helped without joining Britain in combat. The Falklands and other overseas commitments therefore remain part of the requirements considered for British ship design.
