NASA's test pilots came from several services

A Stargate staffing discussion corrects the assumption that NASA's early space programme relied exclusively on Air Force pilots.

Question

Does Stargate's Air Force staffing reflect NASA choosing Air Force pilots for its space programme?

Short answer

That explanation overlooks Navy and Marine test pilots. NASA recruited across those services, including naval aviators such as Neil Armstrong and Alan Shepard.

Notes

NASA's early astronaut recruitment drew test pilots from the Navy and Marine Corps as well as the Air Force. Test flying supplied experience of vehicles with unusual flight characteristics, which made the occupation relevant across service boundaries. Neil Armstrong is identified as a naval aviator, while the other two Apollo 11 crew members came from the Air Force. Alan Shepard provides another naval example as the first American in space. The original seven astronauts are then counted as three Air Force pilots, three Navy pilots, and one Marine pilot, correcting the idea that the programme simply chose Air Force personnel.
