The Nakajima A4N in an early 1939 air war

Japan's January 1939 carrier-fighter force still relied on Nakajima A4N biplanes, sharply limiting the capability later associated with the Zero.

Notes

The Nakajima A4N, or Type 95 carrier fighter, was an important part of the Imperial Japanese Naval Air Service in January 1939. The biplane entered service in 1936, remained in production until 1940, and carried two forward-firing 7.7 mm machine guns. Its engine produced roughly 670 to 740 horsepower depending on the fuel mixture. These specifications correct the easy anachronism of importing the Zero's later reputation into an early 1939 scenario.
