Jeremy Stokes's biography of his father follows a midshipman through major Mediterranean, Atlantic, Arctic, and Pacific operations. The chapter list spans HMS Glasgow, Queen Elizabeth, Malta convoys, Operation Torch, Salerno, convoy JW 56, and Juno Beach. Stokes survives three torpedoings during that wide-ranging service. His experience gives the book a personal route through several very different parts of the naval war.
