Monarch's protection included ten-inch barbette armour and eleven-inch turret armour. Deck armour varied between one and four inches, while the belt ranged from eight to twelve inches. By October 1914, sheltered guns had been enclosed in casemates and a fire-control director had been installed. A pair of three-inch anti-aircraft guns addressed both lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air threats early in the war. More armour followed Jutland without seriously reducing the ship's performance.
