The Moltke class continued the German shift toward battlecruisers expected to seek fights. Its 11-inch/50 guns retained an offset wing-turret arrangement. Firing a wing turret across the deck could increase the broadside, but the blast would damage the firing ship. Damage that might be accepted during battle made such firing unattractive for peacetime practice.

Moltke class and the cross-deck-fire compromise
Offset wing turrets allowed cross-deck fire in theory, but blast damage limited how useful that arrangement was in practice.
