Type 17 missiles and Japan's iterative weapons development

Eight Type 17 anti-ship missiles introduce Japan's gradual development of domestic missile technology alongside the use and adaptation of American systems.

Notes

Mogami's quoted surface-strike fit comprises eight Type 17 anti-ship missiles. Japan's domestic missile capability has developed through successive projects that build technology and skills. Earlier work is tentatively traced to Type 88 or SSM-1, with conceptual roots in the 1970s and emergence in the 1980s. Type 12 follows as a more recent development. Domestic work proceeds alongside the use, adaptation, and local manufacture of some American missile systems. This is an outline of accumulating industrial capability, with the early designation recalled tentatively and no detailed technical genealogy established.
