Moffett's survival could reshape senior U.S. naval leadership

A helicopter program that diverts Moffett from the Akron preserves a technical sponsor and a plausible future Chief of Naval Operations.

Notes

Moffett's historical enthusiasm for airships led to the USS Akron flight that killed him in 1933. A serious helicopter program could redirect that attention and leave the most politically connected U.S. naval-aviation advocate alive. A suitable sea command was already being discussed and could have prepared Moffett for promotion to Chief of Naval Operations. That possibility would place an aviation-minded officer in the Navy's senior post instead of leaving the later leadership path unchanged. The counterfactual therefore affects procurement through both the technology Moffett champions and the authority he might eventually hold.
