The proposed rear-ramp container system returns during the discussion of modern multi-role logistics aircraft. An airborne-warning or anti-submarine module could be rolled into a common Merlin airframe and connected through standardized openings and interfaces. Separating mission equipment from the helicopter would make it easier to repair or update sensors without rewiring every aircraft. A replacement airframe could then be designed around the same module or the module adapted to the new platform. The concept trades some higher initial airframe cost for long-term flexibility in upgrades, maintenance, and fleet assignment.

Mission modules could separate Merlin upgrades from airframes
Returning to the Merlin proposal, removable mission modules could simplify refit, repair, and migration to a later airframe.
