Modon and Coron: Venice loses its forward eyes

Ottoman attacks on Coron and Modon removed bases that supported Venetian fleet access, intelligence gathering, and observation of movement around the Greek coast.

Notes

Kemal Reis followed Lepanto by striking a chain of Venetian positions and vessels around Greece. At Modon, Ottoman bombardment and capture denied the Venetian fleet use of a critical facility. Modon and Coron were known as the republic's two eyes because they supported forward intelligence gathering and observation of maritime movement. Their loss blinded Venice along a route essential to its eastern Mediterranean system. With those forward positions gone, Ottoman cavalry raids reached Venetian territory in northern Italy.
