If Tribals reappeared in Portsmouth, how should they be modernised and used?
Short answerA Daring-class hull would be the more practical modernisation candidate; a modern Tribal would have to become far larger to carry credible contemporary equipment.
NotesThe Tribals were excellent destroyers for their own period but are too small to absorb a credible modern combat system without fundamental change. The larger postwar Daring class would be the better starting point, with modern turbines, propulsion, and more internal volume. Restored Tribals could make attractive presence or patrol ships, but they would not remain effective front-line warships for long. A genuinely modern Tribal analogue would have to grow to roughly 5,000 or 6,000 tons, at which point it would no longer be a simple refit of the historic design.
