Is there a case for troopships in the twenty-first century?
Short answerThere is a possible role for moving very large numbers of people, but normal practice separates airlifted personnel from equipment carried by sealift.
NotesMoving personnel in very large numbers still offers a possible role for troopships. The usual assumption is to secure an airfield, fly in personnel, and send their equipment by sea. Moving a whole division raises the question of fast sealift, which is available in limited numbers. Roll-on/roll-off vessels or ships with their own cranes can unload equipment more quickly and flexibly. Container ships depend on access to a functioning container port.
