What Unicorn suggests about drone-support ships

Modern drone-ship and LHD proposals repeat Unicorn's core lesson that sustained aviation depends as much on maintenance and repair as on launching aircraft.

Notes

Present discussions of drone ships and landing helicopter docks repeat the support problem Unicorn addressed. As unmanned aircraft grow, ships built to operate them can begin to resemble aircraft carriers, whatever label is used. The more important continuity is maintenance: aircraft and drones need repair, servicing, stores, and personnel close enough to sustain a useful sortie rate. A support ship allows that work to remain near the operating area instead of sending damaged aircraft back to a distant base. Unicorn's historical value therefore offers a practical test for modern concepts focused too narrowly on the flight deck or vehicle count.
