Independence, endurance, and the task-group test

The lecture's working cruiser test combines appropriate independent survivability, worldwide range, and the ability to serve as a task-group picket or command ship.

Notes

The historical definition becomes an operational test for modern ships. Independence is deliberately qualified: no single warship is expected to defeat an entire carrier group or survive every natural catastrophe, but it should handle appropriate human and environmental threats. A cruiser also needs the endurance and habitability to traverse the world. Within a task group it should be capable of moving outward as an air-defense picket or taking on a command role, rather than remaining only a close escort.
