Does the spread of helicopter-capable amphibious ships and escorts remove the need for Second World War-style escort carriers in trade protection?
Short answerNot entirely, but much of the role may shift to escorts controlling uncrewed aircraft and surface craft across the convoy screen.
NotesEscort-carrier-like ships may return when a convoy is large enough to justify concentrated aviation. Much of the modern system would consist of vessels controlling uncrewed aircraft and surface craft. Escorts could deploy many unmanned rotary-wing dipping sonars while retaining crewed helicopters for weapons, judgment, and complex missions. The torpedo-carrying helicopter would no longer need to expose its own sonar at every search point. This distributed architecture makes the submarine face a much denser and less predictable antisubmarine screen.
