Chapter · 53:51-55:16

Modern carriers still serve the information chain

Modern carriers gather, identify, and relay information before strike, continuing naval aviation’s older fleet-support missions.

Notes

A Queen Elizabeth-class carrier is a command-and-control and information asset as much as a runway for strike aircraft. Merlin helicopters and Lightning fighters gather information while providing reconnaissance, surveillance, force protection, anti-submarine warfare, and strike options. Strike is the final step in a kill chain that begins with acquisition, identification, and weapon selection. Modern carrier aviation therefore serves the whole decision chain rather than only its destructive conclusion.
