Modern amphibious operations can bypass the beach

Al-Faw and the opening Afghanistan campaign show that sea-based landings can use ports, peninsulas, or long helicopter routes rather than a classic assault beach.

Notes

France, Britain, and the United States continued to conduct many small landings even when they attracted little public attention. The Al-Faw Peninsula operation in Iraq is one comparatively recent example. The opening invasion of Afghanistan was also heavily amphibious in orientation because ships sent troops inland by helicopter over Pakistan. Amphibious operations can use a sea base to insert and sustain land forces without making a classic surf-zone assault.
