Frigates and destroyers now undertake much of the independent cruising, presence, and deterrence work associated with cruisers. Their facilities therefore have to support extended periods away from home. Containers in a mission bay can provide workshop space for maintenance during those deployments. Alex Clarke reports conversations about plans and arrangements for such containers, while observing reluctance to discuss that use openly. The proposal links the mission bay to endurance and repair capacity as well as the ship's combat equipment.
