Why warship missions matter more than Top Trumps rankings

A Kiev, Type 45, and Iver Huitfeldt comparison shows why warships should be judged against their missions and balance of strengths.

Notes

Kiev is an unconventional carrier and a serious surface combatant. A Type 45 is a specialist air-warfare destroyer built around that mission and the SAMPSON radar. The Iver Huitfeldt's 32 Mark 41 cells can support Standard missiles and potentially Tomahawks, giving it a wider range of roles. Although Denmark calls it an air-warfare frigate, this comparison treats it as a general-purpose frigate with strong air defence. For flexibility, the preference is the Danish ship; for dedicated air defence, the Type 45 has a slight advantage in this assessment. SAMPSON is probably decisive in that judgment, alongside missile capacity and the addition of CAMM. The Maya class appears briefly as a possible choice for combining both qualities. Comparing those strengths requires an assigned mission: a different balance of capability does not establish a universal ranking.
