Cold War ships such as the Spruance class and Soviet missile destroyers carried a wider combination of weapons and missions. Missiles allowed a single ship to take on work formerly divided among several kinds of combatant. That versatility also encouraged the expectation that destroyers should perform every required task. Long-running Burke production also illustrates how repeatedly building a familiar design can reduce its relative cost.
