Missed investment cycles and imperial decline

Britain inherited a world-class nineteenth-century network but repeatedly deferred its regular renewal after 1914.

Notes

Britain spent the nineteenth century creating an almost unique worldwide strategic infrastructure network and then increasingly lived off that inheritance. Nominal six-year investment cycles were missed in 1916, 1922, and 1928, followed by incomplete Singapore work in the 1930s. Deferred renewal weakened the ports, yards, and support systems on which global naval commitments depended. A leading power that can no longer justify infrastructure investment is already undermining its own position.
