A mistaken ship identity complicates the hunt

Africa Shell's survivors reported Admiral Scheer rather than Admiral Graf Spee, compounding Allied uncertainty about which German Panzerschiff was at sea.

Notes

After reaching shore in their lifeboats, members of Africa Shell's crew identified their attacker as Admiral Scheer rather than Admiral Graf Spee. Their report added to conflicting identifications of the German Panzerschiff at sea. The Royal Navy knew the type of raider it faced but remained uncertain which ship was operating. Identifying the ship mattered because each commander had a different outlook, and British intelligence used those differences to anticipate his decisions.
