Mixed calibres in the director-fire era

The Minotaur class's mixture of twin 9.2-inch and numerous 7.5-inch guns is criticized as a pre-dreadnought solution carried into the age of directed fire.

Notes

In this assessment, the Minotaur class compares poorly with the Duke of Edinburgh and Warrior classes. Although Minotaur gained twin 9.2-inch mountings, its many 7.5-inch guns produced a complicated mixed-calibre battery. A uniform 9.2-inch armament would have better matched contemporary movement toward dreadnought layouts and directed gunnery. Adding weapons was no automatic improvement when spotting, fire control, and ammunition systems had to coordinate them in battle.
