The class develops the Town and Crown Colony line without simply copying it: machinery, armor, antiaircraft layout, and internal arrangements all continue to evolve. Four boilers and geared turbines produced 31.5 knots, while the fuel load supported an 8,000-nautical-mile cruising range at sixteen knots. Combining longer-ranged Bofors with higher-rate pom-poms gave layered close defense around nine six-inch and ten four-inch guns. Two triple torpedo mountings preserved a last-resort threat against battleships even as the ships emphasized endurance and air defense.
