Equipment designed for sea can fail ashore

Naval systems proven at sea can encounter a different set of failures when exposed to dust, mud, vibration, and especially sand on land.

Notes

Military equipment is conditioned by the environment for which it was designed. A naval system that tolerates sea service can still fail ashore when dust, mud, and different forms of shaking become the dominant stresses. Sand can be particularly destructive to systems accustomed to maritime conditions. Transferring technology between operating environments requires adaptation because proven performance at sea may not carry over to land.
