Helicopter lift creates the Mighty Mite requirement

Marine demand for a vehicle light enough to travel by helicopter produces the Mighty Mite, a requirement soon overtaken by larger aircraft.

Notes

The H-19's success encouraged the US Marine Corps to seek a light vehicle that could accompany helicopter-borne forces. The resulting aluminum Mighty Mite was tailored to the tight lift limits of early rotary-wing transport. By the time it entered service, larger helicopters could carry more conventional vehicles, weakening the case for such a specialized design. Early helicopter payload limits had created a procurement requirement that later platform growth quickly overtook.
