Thomas C. Hone's Midway anthology combines specialist scholarship with accounts by officers who participated in the battle. Its selections include Naval Institute articles, oral history, and contributions from Spruance and Layton. Different contributors handle the subjects they know best, allowing operational decisions to be examined from several positions within the battle. The collection also preserves earlier work by participants who were no longer alive when the volume was assembled. Jimmy Thach's 'Flying into a Beehive' is selected for the reading that follows.
