The Scimitar as naval aviation's midfielder

The midfielder analogy explains why an adaptable aircraft can be operationally vital without excelling as either interceptor or attack specialist.

Notes

The Scimitar is compared with a football midfielder, the player who links defense and attack and shifts between jobs as the game changes. Midfielders read the whole field and support specialists without usually being the best scorer or defender. In the same way, the Scimitar could reinforce interception, strike, tanking, or training missions without being the best aircraft for any one of them. That adaptability made it useful when the carrier air group needed to respond to changing circumstances, even if the specialists attracted more attention.
