The Merlin has moved from the new aircraft remembered from an early work-experience placement with 824 Squadron to an established workhorse, and discussion of its eventual replacement is already beginning. Early British aircraft reportedly arrived with capable avionics whose individual systems did not integrate cleanly with the intended British equipment. The delivered electronics were therefore removed and rebuilt in the United Kingdom so sensors and systems would work together. The cost argument is that rebuilding the suite could have been cheaper than paying several manufacturers to redesign their products around one another. The resulting platform supports 824 Squadron's continuous work training submarine hunters to protect sea lanes, national resources, and the nuclear deterrent.
