With the same total number of barrels, what was the best balance between many single AA mounts and fewer multiple-barrel mounts?
Short answerThere was no universal formula; twins or triples often balanced target coverage, fire density, and survivability best.
NotesThere is no fixed formula for the best medium anti-aircraft mounting arrangement. With a strict limit on the total number of guns, twin or triple mounts would probably provide a useful balance of firing positions and fire density. Eight guns in two quadruple mounts might cover only one target on each side, while distributing the barrels among more mounts creates more possible engagements. Concentrating barrels also means that one hit can remove a large part of the battery. Multiple barrels remain desirable because they create a denser beaten zone around the target.
