How a German submarine focus changes Matapan and Taranto

Without a major German surface threat, Britain could concentrate a stronger battle fleet at Cape Matapan and send more carriers against Italy at Taranto.

Notes

Without a major German surface threat, the Italian navy would face a heavier British concentration. At Cape Matapan, King George V and Prince of Wales could join Warspite, Queen Elizabeth, and Valiant in the battle line because fewer capital ships would be tied to Atlantic duties. Glorious might also survive the Norway campaign and add another carrier to Mediterranean operations. Extra carrier strength could support attacks such as Taranto. By late 1941, Italy would face a much worse balance of naval power.
