Crete's early basing organization drew on mobile naval resources before responsibility passed to the Army. Tender workshops could have strengthened that base and supported aircraft operating ashore as well as their own seaplanes. Bristol Blenheims, Gloster Gladiators, and Hawker Hurricanes were available for Crete's defense, but sustaining aircraft there was a serious constraint. The same approach could have helped other Mediterranean islands establish usable air bases quickly. Around Singapore, strike aircraft were worn down on reconnaissance missions because dedicated patrol aircraft and forward support were insufficient. Tender-supported reconnaissance could have reduced that burden and allowed aircraft to operate away from the main base.

Crete, Singapore, and mobile aviation support
Mobile workshops could reinforce fragile air infrastructure in Crete, the Mediterranean, and the Far East while freeing scarce strike aircraft from reconnaissance.
