Autoloaders did not emerge through a single prototype because battleship mountings already mechanized much of the physical work. People increasingly served as sensors and controllers rather than as the main source of lifting power. They had to judge whether shells and charges were correctly positioned while the ship moved, the turret trained, and guns fired nearby. A mistaken loading decision could prevent the weapon from firing or create a dangerous failure inside the barrel. The difficult transition was therefore from machine-assisted handling to reliable machine sensing and control.

Autoloaders evolved from existing machinery
Large-gun automation emerged by extending mechanical handling systems while humans continued to supply judgment and sensing.
