Why the Maya class is a modern destroyer benchmark

The Maya class is the preferred modern example for its refined Burke-derived design and helicopter facilities, with further close-in protection still desired.

Notes

The Maya class is the personal choice for an ideal modern destroyer in this comparison. Japan refined the Burke family through small batches and retained a helicopter hangar alongside a broad offensive and defensive weapon set. Type 055 is acknowledged as officially a destroyer, although its size places it closer to a cruiser in this assessment. Maya still falls short of the preferred close-in defensive fit. A proposed minimum of roughly 96 VLS cells reflects the magazine depth expected from an independently useful destroyer, and that preferred threshold could rise.
