Mark 41 cells do not give Type 31 an area-defence role

Type 31's radar and mission determine which Mark 41 weapons would add useful capability without recasting the frigate as an area-air-defence ship.

Notes

A vertical-launch system is useful only when its missiles suit the ship's sensors and mission. Type 31 is not described as carrying the long-range radar needed for area air defence, so fitting Mark 41 cells would not turn it into that kind of escort. ASROC and anti-ship missiles are offered as useful choices for its general-purpose and presence roles. Quad-packed Sea Ceptor is another possible load if point defence is the priority. These are personal recommendations rather than an announced Royal Navy weapons plan.
