Maritime patrol aircraft turn clues into local contacts

P-8s, P-1s, and similar aircraft rapidly investigate candidate contacts, deploy sonobuoy fields, and mark dangerous water for other forces.

Notes

Ocean surveillance can produce more candidate contacts than commanders can immediately resolve, so maritime patrol aircraft are dispatched to localize and classify them. Sonobuoys and magnetic anomaly detection narrow the search, while torpedoes become an option only after sufficient confidence. Even without a firing solution, a probable submarine contact can turn an area into a de facto minefield that friendly ships avoid.
