Patrol aircraft convert clues into submarine contacts

Follow the process by which maritime patrol aircraft prioritize uncertain contacts, investigate them, and decide whether to attack or hand them off.

Notes

Wide-area sensors produce many possible contacts rather than a neat list of confirmed submarines. Commanders prioritise them by proximity to convoy routes, strategic assets, and planned operating areas, while sometimes checking less obvious locations to conceal their own priorities. Patrol aircraft then use sonobuoys and magnetic anomaly detection to classify a contact, attack with torpedoes, summon helicopters, mark it for another force, or reject it as a false alarm. The P-3 Orion, P-8 Poseidon, and Kawasaki P-1 illustrate different maritime-patrol solutions. The P-1 falls chronologically between the P-3 and P-8, and its operating characteristics may suit Mediterranean patrols differently from the larger P-8.
