Mare Island's building ways set a hard limit on cruiser construction

Chicago's construction reveals how dock and slip dimensions constrained even one of the largest American naval yards on the Pacific coast.

Notes

Mare Island was the first US Navy base established on the Pacific coast and later coordinated much of the San Francisco Bay area's wartime shipbuilding. Its four docks were completed between 1891 and 1942, while the yard had eight shipbuilding ways of sharply different sizes. Chicago measured about 182 meters overall, which ruled out every building way except the 210-meter number one way. The calculation shows that a yard could look large on paper yet have only one slip able to accept a particular cruiser. Fleet expansion depended on the dimensions of existing docks and ways as much as on plans for new ships.
