Why Malta did not receive 15-inch coastal guns

Interwar budget decisions and lost construction time ended Malta's proposed 15-inch coastal-gun scheme.

Question

Were 15-inch or 16-inch guns ever proposed for Malta?

Short answer

Fifteen-inch coastal guns were discussed in the 1920s, as at Gibraltar and Singapore, but the schemes died during Winston Churchill's period as Chancellor and were reconsidered too late.

Notes

Planners considered 15-inch guns for Malta alongside similar schemes for Gibraltar and Singapore. The proposals died during the interwar financial decisions made while Winston Churchill was Chancellor of the Exchequer. When the idea returned later, there was no longer enough time to complete the work before war. Fortress capability depended on budget timing and construction lead time as well as the weapon itself.
