Malta as the Mediterranean's supply-route lynchpin

Holding Malta threatened Axis supply routes to North Africa through aircraft, submarines and intelligence operations.

Notes

Malta's World War II importance was operational rather than symbolic. Aircraft, submarines and intelligence assets based on the island could reach maritime supply traffic bound for Axis armies in North Africa. That threat forced the Axis to protect shipping while accepting losses, delays and shortages along a vital logistics route. Malta was a forward base and an interdiction hub at the centre of the Mediterranean. Holding the island turned geography into sustained pressure on an enemy land campaign.
