Malta as an aircraft staging point for North Africa

During quieter periods, Malta helped move fighters onward to North Africa, so carrier deliveries supported changing priorities across the theater.

Notes

Malta's need for fighters varied with the level of attack against the island. During quieter periods, aircraft delivered by carrier could continue to North Africa, where they were more urgently needed. The island therefore served as a staging point as well as a defended destination. This route accelerated deliveries for the North African campaign. The willingness to send aircraft onward shows why a picture of unchanging siege conditions misses shifts in operational priorities.
