Malafon and Ikara compared

The French and Australian-British systems are treated as broadly comparable ways to deliver a torpedo quickly to a distant submarine contact.

Question

How does the French Malafon system compare with Ikara?

Short answer

They are broadly comparable rocket-assisted torpedo systems, and both offered a useful long-range ASW capability.

Notes

Both systems extend a ship's anti-submarine reach by carrying a torpedo through the air before release. Malafon and Ikara are treated as near equivalents rather than fundamentally different weapon concepts. A helicopter or other forward sensor could hold contact while the ship rapidly sent the weapon to the datum instead of forcing the aircraft to return and rearm. Several ship-launched torpedoes could also approach from different bearings and compress the submarine's escape options. Their disappearance left a gap between onboard torpedo tubes and helicopter delivery.
