Mahan's ideas extend beyond fleet battle, and Corbett's extend beyond operations considered separately from battle. Treating the two as opposites can obscure how closely parts of their thinking overlap. Alex Clarke describes his own approach as drawing useful elements from several theorists while disagreeing with particular arguments. His work on conventional deterrence also draws on Cable and Gorshkov. Labeling that approach solely by its resemblance to Corbett misses those other influences.

Mahan, Corbett, and the wider study of naval deterrence
Mahan and Corbett overlap more than a battle-versus-operations division suggests, while deterrence theory draws on other writers too.
