Maestrale and Oriani: larger hulls with familiar armament

Maestrale and Oriani broke with the Sella design pattern while retaining a gun and torpedo fit familiar from much smaller ships.

Notes

The Maestrale and Oriani designs tried to leave the exhausted Sella pattern behind without adopting the much larger Navigatori model for the general destroyer force. Four ships of each class followed. Despite greater displacement, they retained four 4.7-inch guns in two twin mounts and six 21-inch torpedo tubes, an armament already familiar from much smaller predecessors. Oriani also carried two 120 mm star-shell guns to provide illumination. Those guns did little to resolve the criticism that ordinary fighting firepower had failed to keep pace with hull growth. A useful torpedo spread and a high cruising speed left that basic question unanswered.
