Italian three-drum boiler development drew on Yarrow practice. Parsons-derived turbines were familiar because Italy had already built them under prewar licence. Two shafts, two turbines, and three boilers were intended to produce 60,000 shaft horsepower. The plant was not arranged as alternating boiler and turbine units, so a central hit could affect more of it than a fully separated layout. That vulnerability was accepted within an otherwise substantial improvement. A 20-knot cruising speed and 35-knot maximum supported active manoeuvring, although no speed could remove the consequences of a well-placed hit.

Machinery power and survivability
Familiar Parsons-derived turbines and three-drum boilers were intended to produce 60,000 shaft horsepower, with limited machinery separation accepted as a survivability compromise.
