Shell hoists and cordite completed the ammunition chain

M33 needed protected shell hoists, carefully stored cordite, and temperature monitoring to turn carried ammunition into safe, sustained gunfire.

Notes

Shells in the magazine were useful only if the crew could hoist them to the guns and supply the separate propellant charge. M33 therefore carried several cordite types in a compartment equipped with a thermometer. Heat, cold, and damp could all make the propellant dangerous or unreliable, so ammunition safety depended on storage discipline as much as gun drill. The nearby steering machinery and Royal Marines' mess also show how propulsion, fighting systems, and living spaces were forced together inside the compact hull.
