The scale of M-class destroyer construction

The M-class family shows how British destroyer construction could expand far beyond a batch of twelve ships.

Notes

Seven individual service histories introduce a much larger destroyer programme. The M-class grouping is given as 85 vessels, or 103 under a broader interpretation. Names beginning with M, N, O and P appear within that grouping. These alternative totals depend on how the family is defined, so a single small batch gives a misleading impression of its scale.
