Chapter · 10:29-11:26

Expanding an existing destroyer design for wartime production

Minion's place in the first war programme illustrates how continued prewar design work enabled rapid expansion.

Notes

Minion was ordered under the first war programme. Other members of the M-class family had already been ordered before the war. Continued construction and incremental design changes left the Royal Navy with a recent design that yards could build in much greater numbers when war began. The comparison with later British and American wartime programmes stresses the usefulness of having that design ready when expansion became urgent.
