Chapter · 11:31-12:25

M-class weapons and the cost of rapid hull construction

The armament layout and short hull life show the capabilities and durability compromises of wartime destroyer construction.

Notes

The armament described comprises three 4-inch guns in single mounts, 40 mm two-pounder pom-poms and two twin 21-inch torpedo launchers. Mounting the torpedo launchers on the centreline allowed them to fire to either side. The short postwar careers are linked to hull construction using ungalvanized steel. That choice saved construction time and material, but left the hulls less protected against deterioration during hard North Sea service. Minion eventually went to Germany for breaking up.
